Drug and Alcohol Recovery Program

Anyone can be homeless. Men who walk through the doors of The Midnight Mission come from all walks of life - from very humble beginnings to lives of affluence and privilege; some illiterate and others with college degrees; some raised in the cycle of welfare dependence to those who have owned their own corporations.

Whatever the road traveled, when a person wants help; he can find that help at The Midnight Mission.

Our program utilizes proven recovery methodologies, job therapy, education and life-skills training enabling our participants to erase dependencies and move to self-sufficiency.

The overall philosophy addresses the following areas:
  • Clients' strengths, weaknesses, and needs are identified.
  • The client and counselor together determine and agree to a plan of treatment.
  • Alcohol and drug abuse therapies and treatment programs.
  • Utilization of the program of Alcoholics Anonymous as a recovery methodology.
  • Employment readiness training and job therapy.
  • Educational programs.
  • Fiscal management, including a 70% savings requirement and free income tax preparation.
  • Successful transition back into the community.

Our participants are required to explore the program of recovery outlined in the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous. This is a fellowship that has given millions of people the tools necessary to recover from alcohol addiction. Quite simply-it works for those that work it.

Both program participants and guests are invited to attend the meetings that we hold here at the Mission. In addition, we provide transportation to all of our program participants who would like to attend outside meetings.

Our Job Therapy component ensures that every participant in our program takes part in the maintenance of our facilities and the delivery of our services. This activity builds self-esteem by empowering our participants with a sense of accomplishment. As clients earn the privilege, they are given employment opportunities within the Mission operations. Seventy-seven percent of the paid jobs at the Mission are held by current and former program participants–formerly homeless men now serve the homeless community.

Our Education Program serves the needs of a population striving for self-sufficiency by starting with the basics and serving each participant in an individualized manner. We have collaborated with LAUSD to provide GED preparation and fundamental skills sets required for personal growth.
